This study aimed at exploring the appropriate methods for teaching values to pupils of the Basic Education-Cycle One-schools in Oman. It also aimed at identifying the effect of two variables, namely: experience and grade, on the use of these methods by teachers.
The researcher used a sample of 32 teachers chosen randomly from four schools in Batina South region. The researcher used only two tools for the purpose of the present study: - Value Content Analysis Form whose reliability was established by a jury. An inter-coder agreement check was also conducted using the 90 percent consensus between the researcher's analysis and that of another analyst by using Cooper Formula. - Observation Card which included six teaching methods used in Cycle One Schools. Reliability was asserted by a jury and validity was established by administering the tools to a small sample other than the study population. The Pearson Coefficient Factor was 0,92. The main findings of the study were: 1- The number of the appropriate teaching methods to teach values in these schools is Six: stories, role-play, listening and repeating, practical performance, self-learning and debate and discussion. 2- The level of using appropriate value teaching methods was found to be relatively low by the members of the sample for all the methods together as well as for every single method in isolation. 3- There was no statistically significant difference in the use of appropriate value teaching methods that can be attributed to the variable of years of experience. 4- There was a statistically significant difference in the use of role płay due to the classes room variable. The source of these was the second and fourth classes, in favor of the fourth class in the use of the third and fourth procedures only of the method which were: the good management of the role-play and the orientation of the students towards the actual role playing of the characters in the text. In the light of these results, the following recommendations were made: training teachers on the use of the appropriate value teaching methods and rewriting teacher's manual to include the guidelines that enhance the teachers role in teaching values. Further studies on value teaching were also proposed.
