الملخص الإنجليزي
The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of teaching the female students on their achievement and attitudes toward science when science (electricity and magnetism) textbook unit was rebuilt using Science- Technology- and Society (STS) approach.
The sample of the study consisted of 143 students chosen randomly, and was divided into two groups; the experimental group and the control group. The experimental group consisted of 72 students. This group was taught with the rebuilt unit while the control group were taught the same unit as existed in the textbook with no modifications. To insure the equivalence between the two groups, a random assignment and a pretest-posttest method were used. Pre- and posttest designs were used for assessing students in two domains of achievement and attitudes toward science.
To determine the attitudes of the students toward science, a questionnaire consisted of 31 items was used . Also at the end of the study, the students were asked to set for a final exam that consisted of multiple choice questions (8 questions), complete the sentence (11 questions) and short assays (12 questions).
There is no significant difference between the two groups neither in achievement nor in attitudes concerning pre- test results. However, regarding posttesting there is a significant difference between the groups taught in both the achievement and attitudes toward science in favor of the experimental group.
Consequently, it is recommended that STS should be considered in designing and developing science curriculum. Teachers also need to be trained in the manner of how to use this approach in teaching and learning. The study also recommends further studies taking such approach.
