This study aimed to identify the patterns of citizenship education included in Social Studies textbooks for Grades 3-12 in Sultanate of Oman. To answer the study questions a list of raising patterns of citizenship that should be included in these textbooks was prepared. The list was extracted from educational literature and previous researches in this field. The list was validated by specialized referees. The final version of the list consists of 45 sub-pattern, distributed in two main patterns; Citizenship education as legal status at the local and global level and citizenship education as given achievement at both local and global level
The researcher analyzed the social studies textbooks in the light of patterns of citizenship education using content analysis technique , with the idea as a unit of analysis The researcher then checked this list further by seeking the opinion of one assistant to analyze a random sample representing about 20% of the targeted sample and a further analysis was conducted by the researcher herself; the ratio of agreement between the researcher and the assistant analysis ranged between 84,48 % to 90%. The findings of the study were as follows. 1- A list of patterns of citizenship education that should be included in social studies textbooks for grades (3–12). 2- Textbooks concentrate on citizenship education as a given achievement at both local and global levels, reaching its Replication rate of ( 60%) of the total Replication, while citizenship education as legal status at the local and global levels gained less attention. 3- There is a variance of the inclusion of patterns of citizenship education according to grades, the twelfth and eleventh grades got the highest percentage of inclusion, followed by the ninth and eighth grades, whereas the remaining grades have the lowest inclusion of patterns. In light of these findings several recommendations were proposed concerning the inclusion of the patterns of citizenship education.
