The aim of the study was to identify the types of punishment used in the interior region in the Sultanate of Oman and their relationship with several demographic variables including sex and experience. The study also aimed at exploring the relationship between teacher's attitudes towards aggression and types of punishment they used.
Two Instruments were applied to a sample of 334 male and female teachers differed in their teaching experience. The first instrument was the punishment types questionnaire, designed for the purpose of this study, consisted of three dimensions, and the second instrument was the Buss and Bury Aggression questionnaire, divided into four dimensions. Several measures were made to ensure the validity and reliability of the instruments.
Results of the study indicated that the most frequently used punishment dimension was the Indirect Punishment, followed by the Physical and then the Verbal one, although the actual means were lower than the theoretical means in all these dimensions. The most commonly reported types of punishment were: requesting student's parents to come to school, reducing grades from term reports, confronting the pupil with his /her unwanted, assigning additional homework, withholding rewards, asking students to do more home work, and being requested to stand in front of the class.
Furthermore, the findings revealed while there were significant differences between male and female teachers, favoring males (i.e, males used more punishment types than girls). There were no difference according to experience.
In addition, there were positive relationship between dimensions of punishment types and attitudes towards aggression Finally, the findings were discussed in light of literature reviewed and previous studies. Several recommendations and proposals were put forward.
