This study aimed to identify the inclusion of international education principles in social studies textbooks in grades (5-12) in the Sultanate of Oman. A list of International Education principles was prepared in order to answer the questions of the study. The list has been extracted from educational literature review which is related to international education.
The list was introduced to a group of educational specialists in order to verify its reliability. A final copy of the list consists of (81) principles, divided into five dimensions: human rights, human and the environment, world peace, interdependence, and diversity. Then, the textbooks of social studies were analyzed by using the explicit and implicit idea, photo, map, figure, and table as the units of recording while the paragraph was regarded the context unit. The validity was assured by employing two ways: first, the consistency between the analysis of the researcher and another analyst, and second was the consistency between a researcher and herself. The obtained validity was between 79% and 94% respectively.
The study came up with several important results, which can by summarized as follows: 1. A list of International Education principles that should be included in social studies textbooks (grades 5 through 12). 2. The international education principles were embraced to vary
degree in the social studies textbooks. The principles of interdependence came first (42.7%), followed by the principles of
human and the environment (33.4%), then the principles of diversity a (13.3), followed the principles of global peace (6.2). However, human rights principles obtained only (4.4%) 3. The principles of international education unevenly spread in the
social studies textbooks in grade (5-12), where grade eleven embraced 20.65%, of these principles followed by grade twelfth grade twelve (19.32%). Then, grade tenth embraced (11.3%), followed by grade nine (10.65%) and grade eight (10.43%). The grades sixth and fifth have same inclusion amount (9.27%). Finally, grade seven included (9.05%).
