This study aimed to identify the relationship between internet addiction and shyness with ninth-grade primary school students in the governorate of Muscat. The study sample consisted of (791) students from Muscat governorate schools (384 male and 407 female students). The scales of internet addiction and shyness were used after checking their psychometric characteristics and their suitability to the purposes of the study:
The number of Internet addicts reached (268) students by a percentage of (33.88%) of the total study sample that is (791) students from grade nine. On the other hand, the number of Internet non-addicts reached (523) students who represent (66.12%) of the study sample.
The number of those who are shy is (609) students and they are (76.99%) of the sample which represents (791) students from ninth grade; while, non-shy students are (182) and they represent (23.01%) of the study sample.
Furthermore, a positive correlation relationship was found statistically at the significance level (a<0.01) between internet addiction and the level of shyness among the study sample. In light of shyness among the study sample, there were no significant statistical differences at the level of significant
between the groups of internet addicts and non addicts.
In addition, the presence of significant statistical differences in the
level of addiction to the internet was due to the gender variable, in the
three dimensions of control, visibility, and endurance (for males), and the area of conflict (in favor of females). Besides, the lack of significant statistical differences between internet addicts and non-addicts was as a result to the variable of (gender), in the dimensions of (mood changing, withdrawal symptoms, and relapse).
Also, there were no significant statistical differences at the level of significance (a<0.05), in the level of internet addiction among the study sample because of the educational level of the guardian) variable, in all dimensions. However, there were significant statistical differences at the level of significance (a<0.05), in the level of internet addiction among the
study sample in the conflict dimension, and the differences were in favor
of the parents who held a university degree. Finally, there were no significant statistical differences at the level of significance (a<0.05), in the level of internet addiction among the study sample, due to the professional level of the guardian) variable. And there were no significant statistical differences at the level of significance (a<0.05), in the level of shyness among the study sample due to the variables of (gender, the educational level of the guardian, and the professional level of the guardian as well).
