With such a large child population, high pneumococcal carriage rates can result in a very high incidence of pneumococcal infections. As there are no data on the prevalence of drug-resistant pneumococci (DRP) in Oman, we carried out this survey in order to determine the nasopharyngeal carriage rate of Streptococcus pneumoniae among children and the prevalence of DRP in this country.
