Strategic change management in urban planning in Nizwa City, Oman: dynamics and challenges in modernization and planning.

This study relates to the management of strategic change in urban planning in the city of Nizwa in Oman in order to compare favourably with ultra-modern cities regionally and internationally. It's focuses on five main objectives (1) To give an outline of the brief history of Nizwa City urban planning (2) Discover current status of change management in urban planning (3) Explore change management literature (4) Identify the best practices globally (5) Recommend improvements to achieve targets. The research questions asked were: (a) what is an outline of the brief history of Nizwa City? (b) What is the current status of change management in urban planning? (c) What does change management literature say? (d) What are the urban planning best practices globally? (e) What recommendations should be made to achieve improvements? All that done by using qualitative and quantitative research methods. A general funding of this study is lack of knowledge of 4th industrial revolution, lack of staff exchanges, lack of finance, lack of skills, shortage of engineers, poor investment inflows, slow modernization and lack of adequate infrastructure. The researcher found there are many obstacles to desired destiny, this relating to laws, society, the different environments in which they live and financial resources, which constitute a major obstacle to development. Recommendations given were that Nizwa City develops the competence of local engineers and specialists, increase the number of professional technical staff, share experiences, create a huge database, increase budget, cooperate with relevant university departments, proactive planning is required for industrial, commercial and residential areas and leave sufficient areas for future development. It is quite clear that Nizwa City still has a long way to catch up with the best in the world. Further research is recommended to provide to better understand world class urban planning strategy.
