English abstract
The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of using spelling e-games on 5th grade students' spelling performance. It focuses on answering the following questions:
1. What is the effect of spelling e-games on fifth grade EFL learners' spelling
performance?
2. What are fifth grade learners' attitudes towards spelling e-games?
The study sample consisted of the fifth grade female learners in an Omani government basic education school in the academic year 2007/ 2008. They were 56 female learners in the basic fifth grade in Al-Dakheliya Region, divided into two " groups. The first group, the experimental group, was made up of 28 learners who used the e-games in learning spellings. The second group comprised 28 learners who were taught using the traditional method inside the classroom. To answer the research questions, two types of instruments were used. First, an achievement test was used to measure learners' spelling achievement following the completion of the experiment. Second, a questionnaire was used to assess learners' attitudes toward using e-games in spelling.
The major findings of the present study were as follows: There was a statistically significant difference between the achievement of the control group and the achievement of the experimental group in favour of the experimental group, which used the e-games in learning spelling. As for the results of the attitude questionnaire that was administered to the experimental group only to measure their attitude towards using e-games, it was clear that the experimental group had a positive attitude towards using spelling e-games. In the light of these results of this research a number of recommendations were made.
