English abstract
The study aimed at identifying the actual application of self-managed schools in the Sultanate of Oman in light of some international experiences. It also aimed at identifying the obstacles that hinder the effective performance of and hence coming up with recommendations that help the decision makers in the Ministry of Education to improve self - managed Schools system and to spread it throughout the schools in the Sultanate of Oman.
In order to achieve the above aims, the researcher designed a structured interview form. The form consisted of two questions. The first question was about the actual application of self - managed school through nine dimensions. They were authority, the actual school curriculum, the reality budget, the actual staff, the actual professional development programmes for staff, the actual reinforcement and rewards, the actual society participation, the actual of information sharing and spreading it and the actual accountability. The second question was about the difficulties.
The study sample consisted of 22 school principals, and 66 senior teachers , eitherwho are acting or designated in the 22 schools in all educational regions in Oman.
The most important findings of the field study were:
1- The actual school management in self - managed School schools shows that the centralized type is still dominant even though the on going efforts to expand decentralization.
2-The duties and responsibilities of administrators and teachers at self managed schools do not differ from other schools in Oman regarding the rules and regulations as all the duties and responsibilities are circulated to all staff members in Omani schools.
3- self - managed schools do not play any role in choosing the school staff.
4-There is no any financial support for schools applying self - managed schools.
5- Ministry of Education rules restrict self - managed schools to develop financial resources as they are not allowed to freely use the school building to look for new financial resources.
In light of the literature review analysis, and the results of this field study, this study present a number of proposed procedures to improve self managed schools in Oman. these procedures are classified according to the school dimensions related to the principles of applying self-managed schools
