English abstract
The current study aimed at investigating the attitudes of students' in second cycle of Basic education in Sultanate of Oman towards civic engagement and to identify the effects of the variables of gender, the class and the governorate on this attitudes, To achieve the aims of the current study, the researcher applied the descriptive methodology in which he prepared a questionnaire consists of seventy three phrases distributed in-to four main domains, namely: students' interests in civic engagement, civic engagement that happened in the past, the schools' role in enhancing civic engagement and expected civic engagement in the future. The validity and stability of the scale had been approved by judges on the basis of measuring the stability factor of the internal consistency according to (Cronbach Alpha) Method which was (-920). After approving the validity and stability of the scale, it was applied to the sample of the study which consisted of (1008) male and female students from the second cycle of basic education schools in the governorates of Muscat, Al-Batinah North and Dhofar.
The results of the study revealed that the level of students' attitudes in second cycle of basic education reached (3,31) which was at average level. It also showed that there are no statistically significant differences at the level standard of (a=0,05) attributed to gender. Findings also revealed statistically significant differences in students' attitudes towards civic engagement due to grade level in favor of grade seven, eight, nine respectively. Moreover, statistically significant differences in students' attitudes towards civic engagement due to educational governorates in favor of Al-Batinah North followed by Dhofar and then Muscat.
