English abstract
This study has aimed to explore the reality of professional development for faculty members in higher education institutions in the Sultanate of Oman from their point of view and sought to put some proposals to develop the professional development of those institutions.
In order to achieve the aims of this study, a questionnaire of five categories was constructed. The categories included (teaching, scientific research, community service, academic supervision and evaluation of students).
The sample of the study consisted of (378) faculty members from higher education institutions in the Sultanate of Oman. Data was analyzed using means, standard deviations, (T) test for investigating the significance of the differences attributable to variables of type to college (public/ private), major of faculty members (scientific sciences / human sciences), gender and analysis of variance for investigating the significance the difference attributable to years of experience and qualification.
The results of the study revealed that the degree the reality of professional development for faculty members in higher education institutions in the Sultanate of Oman for all categories is between middle-level and weak.
The results showed that there were differences between the average estimates of the variable type of college on the categories (scientific research, academic supervision, and evaluation of students) due to the public institutions, also there were significant differences due to years of experience and qualification. However, there were no differences due to gender and major.
Finally, the study has recommended a list to develop the faculty members professionally in higher education institutions in the Sultanate of Oman.
