English abstract
This study aimed at investigating the status of practicing teaching competencies by social studies teachers at private schools in Oman. In addition, the study attempts to examine the effect of a set of variables including gender and teaching experience.
To achieve the aims of the study a descriptive approach was used. the researcher prepared a Class Observation Sheet consisting of (41) items which divided into six domains: lesson planning, lesson application, lesson assessment, content, teaching means and classroom environment. After checking the validity and reliability of the instrument, it was applied to the study sample consisting of (30) social studies teachers (males and females) at private schools in Muscat, at two visits to each teacher.
The study reveals a range of interesting findings about the status of practicing teaching competencies by social studies teachers at private schools in Oman. The data showed a high level of practicing teaching competencies in the domain of "classroom environment" with a medium was not less than (3.50). In addition, the study shows a lower levels of practicing teaching competencies in five domains: lesson planning, lesson application, lesson assessment, content, and teaching means with mediums not more than (3.47). furthermore, the data showed no statistical significant differences at the level of significance (a= 0.05) at teachers' practice of teaching competencies can be attributed to variables of gender and teaching experience except for the content domain which has a statistical significance in favor of teachers who have eleven years teaching experience and more
The researcher recommended the necessity to organize training workshops for social studies teachers at private schools to promote their teaching competences. Additionally, a set of topics was suggested for further studies.
