English abstract
study is to identify the levels of Grade Nine pupils in Sultanate of Oman in mathematical communication. The study aims to answer three main questions:
1- What are the levels of performance of Ggrade Nine pupils in the four mathematical communication skills (Representation, Explanation, Justification and Description)? 2. What are the highest and the lowest levels of performance of Grade Nine pupils in communication skills? 3. Does the level of performance of Grade Nine pupils vary in the mathematical communication test according to the four communication skills? To answer these questions, the researcher prepared a test in the skills of mathematical communication based on what was decided on by the NCTM standards 2000 and literature methodologies. Its validity and reliability were checked by using Cronbach's Alpha equation which stands for 0,84. The researcher used descriptive and analytic methodology in presenting the findings. The study revealed the following results:
• The average performance of Grade Nine pupils ranges between 3.08 and 4.95 In other words, it ranges between the low and average levels. The four skills are arranged as following; The Description is on the top, followed by Representation, then Explanation, and finally the Justification. The average of all the four skills, stands for 4.03. This rate indicates that grade nine pupils used average level of mathematical communication skills. There are statically significant differences between the four skills. The difference is statically significant between the Description and the other three skills in favor of the Description. There is also statically significant difference between Representation, Explanation and Justification in favor ofRepresentation. Moreover, there is statically significant difference between the Explanation and Justification in favor of Explanation.
In the light of the above results the researcher two numerous, for example: 1.Train teachers in and before service on the mathematical communication. 2. Support and promote the mathematical curriculums in Oman with meaningful mathematical communication activities
