English abstract
This thesis aims to study the strategies of argumentative discourse and its role in
the criminal investigations in the Royal Oman Police (ROP) in theory and in practice.
To this end, it drew upon the theories and strategies of argument and their
application on real examples of ROP criminal investigation discourse pertaining to
the crimes of electronic extortion, murder, drug trafficking, which contributed to
the credibility and transparency of the results.
Based on the above, the purposes of the ROP criminal investigation discourse have
been highlighted. Moreover, the practical part of the thesis has been divided into
four chapters. Each chapter includes an application of a certain strategy with its
argumentative methods on the ROP criminal investigation discourse.
The study mainly aims to prove that argumentative discourse in criminal
investigation in Royal Oman Police is the target of all four strategies, irrespective
of their different means and mechanisms.
The study yielded a number of conclusions, notably the requirement of argument
between the parties in criminal investigation and the importance for the criminal
investigator to use an appropriate strategy consistent with the context of each
case.
