English abstract
This research is based on the study of two main problems: the
concept of the unsaid in discourse, and the study of its functions that it
performs. Therefore, it sought to achieve two main objectives:
First: setting the concept of unsaid and presenting determinants that
rid it of the rest of the forms of implicit meanings, and tracking how the
speaker encodes it, then how the interlocutor decodes it.
This is because the term unsaid still faces problems in defining its
concept, and setting clear parameters that are free from the rest of the
(what is implicated). This research depend on pragmatics approachs
offers a more specific concept of the unsaid, by introducing a set of
determinants that adjust the concept, by tracking the forms of the unsaid
in the discourse. Finally it will clarify the mechanism by which the unsaid
is generated, whether it is generated from grammatical structures such as
omission and reference, or from rhetorical methods such as simile,
metaphor, irony, pun, and others. Then it follows what was presented by
the deliberative approaches in addressing the implicit meanings,
especially the unsaid in terms of the steps that the speaker encodes the
unsaid, and then the steps by which the interlocutor decodes the unsaid,
and brings them to the speaker's intent.
Second: After adjusting the point of view of the unsaid, it aims to
build a model for the functions of the unsaid in discourse based on
pragmatics principles. Beginning with the presentation of language
functions at the level of declaration, by addressing models concerned
with dividing and classifying language functions, such as Buhler's model,
Jakobson's model, Orecchioni's model, and Halliday's model. Then
benefit from these models, especially Jakobson's model, in building the
unsaid functions model, based on the principle of deriving jobs from the
basic factors that make up the communication process based on the
unsaid. These factors are: the sender, the receiver, the secondary
receivers, the unsaid meaning, the apparent literal meaning, the carrier
template, and the social system. Seven functions of the unsaid were
identified, in order: the preventive function, the argumentative function,
the concealing function, the ambiguous function, the deceptive function,
the poetic function, and the disciplinary function. Then test this model by
applying it to the dialogues in Aleqd Alfareed book by Ibn Abd Rabbeh.
