English abstract
This study aimed to identify the motives of school students, grades 9-12 of basic education stage, to use the Internet; the problems arising from them; and reach proposed conception about the role of social work in schools through which it can face these problems.
Based on the descriptive method, the researcher selected a purposive sample consisted of: (1381) male and female students; all social workers in schools of Muscat, and some teachers, principals, and experts of the Ministry Education in Oman. The researcher designed the data collection tools which include: a questionnaire for students, a questionnaire for social workers, and interviews with teachers, principals, and experts. Validity and reliability of data collection tools were confirmed. In addition, the researcher used some statistical techniques to analyze data of the study.
The study reached many results, and the most important results were as follows: students confirmed that contact with relatives and friends in Oman and other countries is the most important motive to use the internet; moreover, social problems arising from the use of it is that the Internet obstructs students to participate in household activities. With respect to the roles of social workers in schools, results confirmed that the most important roles of the social worker with students represented in strengthening students' religious motive; while the most important roles of the social worker with parents is to explain the adolescence characteristics and its problems to parents. Moreover, the most important roles of the social worker with the school community is to activate the role of the "Learning Resources Center" in raising students' awareness of the importance of reading. Finally, the most important roles of the social worker with the local community represented in activating the role of mosques and charities organizations in strengthening ethics and values among students.
Based on the confirmed results, the study reached a group of recommendations related to: focusing-or shed light- on the problems arising from the use of the Internet in schools' curriculum, and using school activities to raise awareness about the problems of the Internet among students. Finally, the researcher has developed some mechanisms to implement these recommendations.
