English abstract
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the teaching performance of the Islamic Education student teachers at Sultan Qaboos University in the following branches : interpretation, Hadith, and Fikh . The study also aimed at identifying the effect of the student teachers' gender on their teaching performance.
The population of the study consisted of all the Islamic Education student teachers at Sultan Qaboos University in the 1994 - 1995 academic year (18 males and 12 females). Three observation sheets were used in this study: one for interpretation, another for Hadith, and a third for Fikh . Each of the three observation sheets was divided into nine categories : planing for teaching, teaching techniques, proficiency in the subject matter, instructional media, reinforcement, calssroom management and interaction, verbal expression, formative evaluation, summative evaluation and homework assignment .
The validity of the three observation sheets was established by using a panel of judges. The reliability of the observation sheets was established by calculating the coefficient of internal consistency (Cronbach Alpha for interpretation = 0.82 , for Hadith = 0.83 , and for Fikh = 0.81). Reliability was also estabilished by calculating the coefficient of concordance, (Kendal's Tau : for interpretation = 0.77, for Hadith = 0.82, and for Fikh = 0.78).
The frequencies, percentages , and means were used in this study. The t-test technique was used to determine if there were any statistically significant differences between males and females in the three branches. The results of the study were as follows :
1- All of the subjects of the study achieved high means in the three branches . The means were : 83.18 for interpretation, 84.63 for Hadith, and 84.6 for Fikh .
2- The student teachers did better on the categories of planning for teaching and classroom management and interaction compared with the other seven categories in the three branches.
3- There were statistically significant differences based on gender in the interpretation category. Female student teachers did better than their male counterparts in the following categories : planning for teaching, instructional media, formative evaluation, summative evaluation and homework assignment.
-0 The study offered several recommendations, Some of these were as follows:
1- The need for building more microteaching labs in order to accomodate the increasing numbers of student teachers and thus improve the quality of the training .
2- Organizing regular meetings between the faculty in the department of curriculum and instruction, school principals, and cooperating teachers because they jointly supervise the student teaching program.
