English abstract
The study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of the use of the Big-6 Skills Model in the teaching of social studies to improve the information literacy skills of grade 9 student in Aisha bint Abdullah Al-Rasbyiah fundamental education school (5-9). To achieve the objectives of the study, a quasi-experimental design of a control asymmetrical group with a pre- test and a post-test was applied. The researcher designed a training program based on Big-6 Skills Model, and a test composed of (75) questions based on the scale of information literacy (TRAILS).
The experimental group included a sample of (29) students, and (29) students represented the control group, using a random sampling. Both groups were subjected to two tests: pre-test and post-test. Only the experimental group undertook a practical training for thirteen weeks.
Both experimental group and control group showed the same performance in the pre-test. However, significant differences at (0.05) level appeared in favor of the experimental group in the post-test. Furthermore, a marked improvement in the quality of the final project was in favor of the experimental group.
The responsibles for the Curriculum Department in the Ministry of Education should consider information literacy when designing any curriculum. Also, the study recommended the need for the rehabilitation of both learning resource centers specialists and teachers to make them able of teaching information literacy.
