English abstract
The aim of this study was to determine the effect of using the Problem Based learning strategy (PBL) on the academic achievement and problem solving skills among 10th Grad students of General Education. The sample consisted of (134) female students from one school in Muscat area, (67) student from them were experimental group, which were taught by Problem Based Learning strategy while (67) students were control group taught by conventional method. To answer the study questions, an achievement test, consisted of (24) items and a problem solving skills test consisted of (26) items were used. The validity of both tests were conducted through a panel of judges, whereas the reliability was calculated using Cronbach – Alpha, which sires the value of (0.79),(0.70) respectively. The results revealed that:
There were statistically significant differences between two groups in an achievement test in favor to experimental group. There were statistically significant differences between two groups in problem solving skills test in favor to experimental group. Growth of problem solving skills in both experimental and control groups , but the rate of growing for these skills in experimental group was greater then control group.
According to the previous results , some recommendation have been proposed such as, running seminars and workshops for teachers and supervisors in using problem based learning in teaching .Also training them how to use it in the classroom and adapting lessons in the curriculum in the form of authentic problems that related to students. In addition, the study recommends doing similar studies for other subjects, different stags and learning levels.
