English abstract
The present study aimed at evaluating the skills of teaching literary appreciation of secondary stage teachers & identifying the reasons that hinder it & to achieve this aim, the researcher followed the following procedures: 1. Designing an observation checklist for the skills of teaching literary
appreciation to secondary stage students. 2. An interview to know the difficulties that hinder the application of literary · appreciation to secondary school students.
The sample of the study consisted of (N = 33, 18 males & 15 females) teachers & inspectors of Arabic in Batinah North Region. The data were analyzed by means of the percentages, the mean & the standard deviation.
The main results of the study were as follows: 1. The average of general teaching skills was good. 2. The average core of teaching emotional dimension was low. 3. The average core of teaching verbal dimension was average. 4. The average core of teaching intellectual dimension was average. 5. There are significant mean differences with statistical significance among
the four cores. The best result was in favor of the core of teaching the appreciation of intellectual dimension. The lowest results were for the core
of teaching the appreciation of emotional dimension. 6. There are many reasons which hinder using the skills of teaching literary
appreciation such as the extended syllabus, limited class' time & the insufficient pre-service training.
According to the above results, the researcher suggests a set of recommendations: > Acquainting the trainee teachers of Arabic with the skills of literary
appreciation and giving them more practice to acquire these skills well. → Encouraging them to use the library for extensive reading and to have
access to the literary masterpieces, rhetorics books and linguistic references so that there will be a continuous contact with the subjects, revising them and applying concepts studied. Conducting training courses, seminars and workshops regularly for the Arabic teachers and inspectors to have access to the latest teaching skills and methods, to train them and to evaluate their performance.
