This study investigated the effectiveness of using Excel programme in teaching statistics on students' statistical thinking and attitude toward statistics. A total of 72 eighth grade students were placed in two groups : (1) Experimental group (N= 36) and (2) Control group (N =36).
In order to answer the questions of the study, the researcher prepared a test on a sample of students consisted of (72) female students from Um As'saad Al-Ansariya cycle 2 school in Muscat region. The students were divided into 2 groups: Experimental group that has been taught by Excel programme and a controlled group that has been taught by the ordinary way of teaching.
For the purpose of this study, the researcher prepared two tools:
1)The statistical thinking test which is consisted of (19) questions and distributed among the statistical thinking skills. The validity of the test has been proved by a group of specialists. Also, its reliability has been confirmed by applying the test on fact-finding sample. The calculation of stability factor for the internal consistency purposes resulted (0.76) by Cronback Alpha method.
2)A scale of students' attitudes toward statistics consisted of (28) statements and its validity has been proved by a group of specialists. The reliability reached (0.87).
The study was carried out in the second semester of the academic year (2007 2008) on grade 8 female students. The results indicated that there was statistically significant difference in statistic test in favor of the experimental group. There was also statistically significant differences in students attitudes in favor of the experimental group. Eventually, the study recommended further studies in such area examining the effect excel programme of on the other factors such as levels and studying topics.
